CIC Association

Serving Community Enterprise

I’m enquiring whether there is a register of Community Interest Companies.

The tt-exchange gives eligible UK companies access to software discounts from major technology companies' donation programmes, including Microsoft, Symantec and Adobe.  The discount is targeted towards charities and so the exchange looks for a registration with OSCR or for a charity registered with HMRC.  I’m hoping that CICs could also benefit from the software offer, but presumably would need to be able to demonstrate some sort of registration as community-orientated organisation.

So, has any CIC been able to benefit from the tt-exchange and is there a register of Community Interest Companies?

Any help would be welcome.  Thanks

Hi Kevin

There is a register of CICs that is held by the CIC Regulator.  The latest news on this is that they did review it end of last year but there is no change in policy. They do review their policies twice yearly and this is an issue they keep receiving representation on.

It is perhaps their supplier partners who need to be convinced, and last feedback was they they didnt want to go into a review of all the legal status considerations.

At this stage it is a definite no

Hi John,

I also approached the CIC Regulator and they've replied that there is not a register of CICs saying you can look up a CIC at Companies House.  All the regulator publishes now is a list of new CICs that have started in the previous month.

When you said “… The latest news on this is that they did review it end of last year but there is no change in policy.  They do review their policies twice yearly and this is an issue they keep receiving representation on.  It is perhaps their supplier partners who need to be convinced, and last feedback was they didn’t want to go into a review of all the legal status considerations.  …” were you referring to the tt-exchange or to the CIC regulator?  If the former, then I suppose it's hard luck for us.  If the latter then that’s a shame that for a lack of register, then CICs could be missing out big time.

Kevin

I was referring to tt-exchange. We've made numerous attempts to get on different charity subsidised packages and whilst I wish it were different I can see why they dont want to bother. You are right, a public register specific to CICs much like the Charity register could help but im not sure it's the only reason.

Im raising my energy levels to hold an event or two this year getting CICs together, please remind me to add this to the agenda
