Sky, also to add, I asked the Office of the Regulator for a bit of guidance on whether certain activities would be considered to be of benefit to the community, and they emailed me back today with comment on my particular case.

If you email them for guidance, I think it would be really useful to explain to them in general lay terms of how you think your activities will be of benefit to the community.

Hi Sky, I'm not an expert at all but have been looking into this today. I found the CIC Regulator's current guidance less useful than their guidance I found written in 2010 and since replaced, now available here, see pages 9-13: http://www.artscouncil-ni.org/images/uploads/business-support-docum...

This sets out that to determine if something is of community benefit, look at the 'underlying purpose' towards which an organisation's activities are ultimately directed'. So, as a whole, what community benefit does your organisation produce? This could either be the work of the CIC directly benefits the community, or it could raise funds which are then given to another organisation and which are used to the benefit of the community.

Comments from others on this welcome, I'm thinking through myself.

As I remember, one cannot check the Office of the Regulator in advance to ascertain whether their objects are “In the interest of the Community.”  Thus, I am hoping someone can advise me whether they think a senior co-housing community that cooperatively owns the land and leases from the CIC to build their own dwelling would be acceptable to the regulator.  Our articles would give us total control over who can be a member, who can be a director, who can lease, and all aspects of governance.

Thanks in advance,

Sky McCain

Hi,

Are there any CIC's running in Nottingham that would be willing to share their expertise with a newbie? Thank you!

Mottie Omideyi-Akapo, can you ask your question in a "new discussion"? I'm happy to answer, but it's easier to keep answers and follow up questions together this way. This link should work...

Hi everyone, I'm new to this group, so apologies if my question has already been answered somewhere along the line.  Does anyone know if having a family member on the board of a CIC is frowned upon?  I cannot find any document which states this should not be done, however I was recently informed that this was the case.

I appreciate your comments. Thank you.
