CIOs - Charitable Incorporated Organisations

If anyone is interested in looking at CIOs, I have just produced a briefing on these. I think CIOs could be a very effective tool for CICs to use if they wish to set up a charitable arm to their activities, as well as reducing the regulatory burdens for existing charitable companies. There is also the potential to convert from a CIC to a CIO which is useful in a range of scenarios, including to benefit from tax exemptions as a charity. The briefing can be found by clicking here. Would be interested to hear anyone's thoughts on the potential of CIOs.

Stephen - simple answer why the so called 'model' CIO constitutions are not available in other formats on the Charity Commission's website - the regulator's budget and resources constraints.

Do be aware CIOs are nowhere near as simple as most people have been led to believe they are (and are not necessarily simpler than a charitable company). Anyone considering trying to start up a new  charity needs to do a careful investigation and analysis before making their choice of legal vehicle.

Dear John,

Many thanks, I'll try copying all the pdf text into a new document.

Do you have any idea why the CIC documents ARE available as templates, but not the CIO??

Kind regards, Steve

Hi Stephen

Dont know of any templates, have only worked on one case personally and if I remember it is easy enough to copy all the text direct from the from the Govt PDF copy here .

As they mention themselves you may need legal advice if you make changes to the template and any changes need to be made clear so that they can fully consider them.

We have our legals group but Id think the Charity Comission is the best place to prompt for resources

Best of luck

John

Hello- I'm a new member, and trustee of a community centre charity that wants to become a CIO. I can find templates on gov.uk for CIC documents, but the CIO page only has .pdf files which can't be edited... can you point me to CIO templates as doc files?

Hello Heidi

I think the briefing was not uploaded attached properly on the website. Once clicked downloads the zero rate advertising form instead.
