Do CICs epitomise the Big Society ideal?

I just wanted to spark a debate...  given today's Big Society rather negative outing in the media, I was reminded how much I felt CICs should at least have a seat at that table.

So, are CICs the missing link in the Big Society?  Or are CICs addressing something completely different?

As they say...  discuss!

So Right John, communication, communication, communication to those who desire to keep the community aware of how the future can develop, No community No progressive society, such a shame Community is being used for political gain.

Co operation is a fundamental requirement in business and leads to success. Politicians, well enough said.

I personally think BS is something that has been going for millenia, no-one is against the generic idea as such...the problem is it is a political ideal.....Labour have started to discuss the Good Society.

Neither party has as yet done much to involve CIC in the debate, which is amazing really considering the groundswell

I can only concur with AA`s comments, shame the bs is trying to follow those ideals thinking it`s such a Tory revelation of a new idea...arrrr

its also interesting to see what the co-operative movement is doing with regard to the Big Society, given that so much of BS is echoing what the co-op movement is based on and has been doing for centuries...

at a recent national gathering of co-op support and development bodies and practitioners, there was a debate on whether the co-op movement should be 'in or out?' and the result came back as a resounding "we don't want to be associted with it"! http://www.news.coop/news/Politics/1986

oh dear, "get the people of THIS COUNTRY BACK TO WORK", we the people were and still are working and without dictatorships running our fair and wonderful country.

The big society does seem to in the eyes of some to be a BIG BROTHER attitude, surly in our day and age compassion and understanding is the way forward to establish true growth for our fair and wonderful country, lets not get the cat of nine tails out again.

We are certainly a link that should be used to help push forward the big society. If we can not get the people of this country back to wanting to look after themselves and not believing the government is responsible, then we will never get back to a responsible society.

sorry - one more

"The way we work as a Community Interest Company is a good example of coalition Government's Big Society policy devised by the Conservative party because of the way we engage with people at a local level to give them a fast and future proofed solution that they helped install (by digging the trench along their property, etc) and then giving them control of how profits are spent. Our CIC could easily be the largest example of Big Society in a few years time."
