Be Confident with your bookkeeping and accounting systems

As a business owner you have to make sure you are in control of your finances on a day to day basis, It is no good to wait untill the end of your fianacial year and wait for your accountant to tell you how well your business performed. .

CIC can help save Charity 150 million a year in VAT

I can imagine the headline may raise a few eyebrows, but with the VAT increase happening today I thought it made sense to raise the issue again and test the validity of such a statement.  The legislation is open to any individuals/types of organisation to use to tackle particular issues, but organising information thats useful to particular stakeholder groups such as Charities must surely be encouraged, especially in these challenging times.

Half of social enterprises will be lost in the next 5 years – and it’s our fault!

About a year ago, I argued the pressing and urgent need for social enterprises to value their people more or risk losing them.

Sadly the latest national salary and careers survey seems to suggest that these warnings have fallen on deaf…

Fundraising by helping others to save money on essentials

I am all for receiving grants, however, I prefer to make money by enterprise.

Our organisation helps people at home and in business to save money on their utility bills and by doing so, we receive an ongoing residual income for our cause. (average family savings £817 a year, businesses can save 45% on their current costs)

The company that provides this is an award winning plc company, that has received 9 recommendations through Which magazine for its utilities…

You should act on this - Chris White’s Private Member’s Bill “Public Services (Social Enterprise and Social Value) Bill

Hi Everyone

There's a private members Bill going through Parliament and it has a second reading on Nov 19th, it needs 100 MPs to vote for it and it will probably have an effect on your CIC in one way or another, so please support it if you can.

I have attached a template letter/email for you to send BillLobbyLetter- CIC Association re-draft.doc if the link…

Big Society

As more and more members join this association it is clear there's a willingness to get involved with community activities. Makes me wonder if everyone is getting involved with this government initiative?

As a community radio station we are keen. It seems like a good idea. How do we join in? The Big Society web site, seems to be making progress, and if you live in Windsor & Maidenhead (strange choice) you will… Continue

Just a small point. In Scotland it might be useful to distinguish the locations/regions of CICs by two choices. The first would be Highlands & Islands and the second would be Scotland other. This would reflect the national enterprise development agency set up in Scotland (there are two bodies; HIE and SE) which might be useful in determining policy and practical support or potential support in the future

Additions to CIC Questionnaire

It seems pretty comprehensive to me...........but all the beneficiary areas mentioned are UK centric. I'm not sure if there are any other CIC besides us whose prime beneficiaries are in the developing world....but given that the DFID minister recently gave a speech putting increasing empahasis on supporting the role of business in development, it may be that over time more CIC's may move into this space

The CIC Questionnaire

A very important aspect of Community Interest Company is to build Social Capital.

How are Coalition Governments announcements and policies helping/hindering innovation in this area?

In what way do CICs contribute in adding value especially towards "Big Society"?

The CIC Questionnaire

Here's the baseline survey from last year. We'll be sending out a 2010 version shortly and would welcome any input on what you might like to see included. Most interested to hear from academics and researchers, we intend to integrate with other data sets to upgrade our online functionality. Specifically interested in hearing any comments on which categorisations…

CIC or a cooperative, which to choose?

Well, not 100% sure but I'm pretty sure I'd like to set up Lawtalks as a CIC. Lawtalks runs training courses across the UK, mainly for solicitors but also for others interested in community care law. My question is, which is better CIC or cooperative? As a solicitor I'm quite familiar with regular companies, but would value your assistance with my question.

Bribery Act 2010 - Implications for CICs?

There are currently warnings being posted that the Bribery Act 2010 could apply to charities and that there could be issues to consider when the Act comes in to force in April 2011.

The Act was orginally aimed at big business.

The article, 'Bribery Act could trap unwary charities, finance directors warned' gives some details but is related to charities and is found at:…

As a CIC our year end is 31st March, some of the work we undertake is based on an academic year. We have been told by the accountant that at the end of the financial year any money left over (profit) is due for Corp Tax, even though the money is restricted to a project, one of these projects is ongoing. Is this true and if so is there a way round it.
