CIOs - Charitable Incorporated Organisations

If anyone is interested in looking at CIOs, I have just produced a briefing on these. I think CIOs could be a very effective tool for CICs to use if they wish to set up a charitable arm to their activities, as well as reducing the regulatory burdens for existing charitable companies. There is also the potential to convert from a CIC to a CIO which is useful in a range of scenarios, including to benefit from tax exemptions as a charity. The briefing can be found by… Continue

What is a social enterprise

I am writing a paper called "What is a social enterprise?". This paper forms part of a survey we plan to carry out of social enterprises in our local area of Leicester, Leicestershhire and Rutland. Copies of this paper are available on request to anyone who would comment back to me on it. We are also members of SEEM -Social Enterprise in the East Midlands.

This paper has now been published on my own blog

Caps set at 20% (shares) and 10% (performance loans)

Here's the link to the Regulators full response

Please put your thoughts on record here, from an initial reading I have to say this looks quite balanced and positive.

The concern regarding it causing a detrimental effect to any grant funding has been noted so hopefully we'll get some centralised work done on that, the… Continue

if we don't start to value our own people more, social enterprise will be lost...

The recently published national Careers and Salary Survey 2009/10 (regeneration & renewal 09/21/09) makes for sobering reading for the social enterprise sector:

1) future career opportunities and prospects in social enterprise are felt to be more affected and limited by changes to funding regimes than in the private and public sector;

2) social enterprise (while it may 'punch above its weight') apparently pays its people less than is fair - typical sector salaries see… Continue

Golf Clubs

Anyone have knowledge of any golf clubs that have converted to cic?
Am looking at various options for our local club which is struggling to manage itself with an outdated structure that doesn't work very well.

Help with setting up our new CIC - please!!!

Hi Everyone - I am a very new member!! And I already need help. We have had our first meeting today about setting up a Bollywood dance CIC with a view to raising money for local initiatives. I am already a business owner, but it's a nursery school and so my experience is really quite different. I need to know if anyone can tell me of a good insurance company that would be able to cover us for public liability etc., and if anyone knows anything about Health and Safety policies that would be apt… Continue

social Enterprise mark a double audit fee for CIC

Hi john

I have to agree with you and everyone else that we should not have to pay extra fees just to line someone elses pocket.
Sara Burgess should be fighting this in our corner.

What has Sara said about it ????

Social Enterprise Mark - A double audit fee for CICs?

Update Feb 10 2011- With the recent increase in the Social Enterprise Mark fee to £350 a year from £99, a number of members have moaned to me that we still havent made any progress on the points made in this original post.

1. What shall we do, if anything?  They dont want to address our concerns and the criteria still split CICs, Co-ops and Charities..some can, some cant.

2. Is 372 members a good return for £1million of taxpayers money? Thats…

CICs are Androgynous - First interesting trend from the survey

The first trends are starting to emerge from the data we're collecting via our first survey, one of the most intriguing is the lack of a gender gap within CIC. This balance in gender feeds into an interesting discussion started by Rodney Schwarz at Clearly so (link below)

If you havent already done so, please complete the online survey at CIC Baseline Mapping Questionnaire and ask all the CIC practitioners you know to, the… Continue

IMPORTANT - CIC ACTION REQUIRED

Dear CIC Association members

It is with a certain degree of trepidation that I write this email on behalf of John Mulkerrin and myself.

Since we met in May 2008 John and I have committed ourselves to the furtherance of the CIC legislation and community. We are both believers in what CIC stands for and have been spurred on at every juncture by the amazing people we have met along the way who have shared our passion.

But.

CICs and the legislation we are… Continue
