I am in the process of completing my CIC application, and the necessary paperwork. I have a question concerning part 3 of the 'IN01' form regarding 'Statement of Capital'.
What is the best combination of quantity of shares, value of each share, class of shares, and does all of the share capital need to be paid?
Does the amount of share capital have any influence on future funding?
1000 £1 shares, with 50% paid up giving…
I'm new to the association and am looking for advice on the relative merits of CIC for a musical group. Up till now we have been operating as a 'charitable orgisation' but we need the flexibilty of raising funds by performing for money. The company would still like to remain NPO but would like a more professional constitution.
I have just came out of education to complete a PhD. I want to use the research to assist colleagues in schools. I am particularly interested in improving effectiveness in response to low level disruptive behaviour. My research tools are geared to enhancing teacher's professional development and they represent the core of my 'original contribution to knowledge'. As I have not submitted yet is it advisable for me to protect my intellectual property and licence it to the fledgling CIC or to…Continue

We are currently working with various CIC's in the Health and Care sectors, advising them on all matters relating to VAT. If you are an existing CIC in one of these areas or are thinking of setting up then please feel free to contact us for advice.
Looking at the work we do with our existing clients it appears that there may be many areas where VAT is not being correctly treated. This is resulting in a lack of compliance as well as a…Continue

Financial & Social Austerity can make our road towards Service Excellence look impassable as Services strive to deliver as much as they can with reduced resources and grapple with increased Health, Wellbeing, and Social pressures - we need to make their journey easier.
Services need to be ‘Accessible’, considered ‘…Continue

Well almost. Social Enterprise Magazine reports today that there's potential for business with a social as well as financial return They don't seem to know that it already exists, which is surprising given the effort I made to describe it's impact for the SE 100 index. Here's…Continue

I've heard that funding for CICs is more difficult to attract than for charities (registered or otherwise). At a recent funding fair two stall holders would not touch CICs. As I'm thinking of turning an unregistered charity into a CIC, this weighs against a CIC. The alternative is to register the charity with the Charity Commission and then form a CIC to help support it. Comments welcome to help with a difficult decision.

Interesting times eh? For me December is normally a time for hard reflection on progress made through the year and finalising targets for the next, whilst using the Christmas party season to boost my levels of cheer to compensate for the lack of sunshine. Not so this year, whilst the report on the years achievements and the plan for next years assault on the social economy is safely tucked away, the eggnog just hasn't been able to counter the chill blowing in from the wider economic crisis.…Continue

Attended the Poverty Alliance/ Euro Parliament conference in Edinburgh today: "What Future For Social Europe? Beyond the European Crisis" .
Thought provoking stuff, but clearly, no easy answers. Its good to get together at times like these, we all need to help shape whatever is going to arise when the dust settles.

Has anyone on here converted from a charitable company to a CIC? I know this is possible, with the consent of the Charity Commission but was wondering whether anyone had actually been through the process?
I am an ageing (82) citizen of North Somerset who, from !st October, can expect that community health services will be moved from the PCT and be provided by a CIC with the above name.
Both from the health standpoint and from a wish to see socially oriented ventures (trading or not) promoted as part of generating a collaborative society, I am lining up background from relevant sources to improve my own and local understanding. Pro tem I do not expect to be contributing, but…Continue
I am currently converting my school-based counselling and training company (in Cornwall) into a Social Enterprise but unsure where to look for funding/grants. I’d greatly appreciate hearing from other people’s knowledge and experience
Background: More children, teenagers and staff need counselling support than ever before and my view is that the way forward is to root counselling support in schools for easy access and effective systemic work. However, schools just…Continue

I have a question for finance professionals working with CIC's.
If a CIC has grant income and trading income do you split it in their annual accounts and only calculate Corporation tax on the trading income. I asked this question of a tax inspector and the reply seemed to be yes but would like re-assurance from those working in the field.
