lots of CICs but what are they doing?

so - this may (hopefully) provoke some discussion: a posting on a LinkedIn group recently said that of the 5000+ registered CICs, only 1% were co-operatives and the majority are 'inactive' (not trading) which was based on the authors looking up their records at Companies House.

if this is the case, then this surely poses an urgent question for the Association - namely what's going on if people are incorporating as CICs but then not actually doing anything? I know that the CIC…

where next for social enterprise (and CICs) in the 'big society'?

There’s increasing interest from politicians and investors for social enterprises to enter ‘non-traditional’ market places (apparently there’s a belief that social enterprises don’t usually foray out of construction, catering or childcare into markets like telecoms, IT, financial services, etc etc...), especially into industries where private businesses have failed.

So – leaving aside the argument that if other businesses fail in these markets, where is the logic in us…

Third Sector News - Duncan Fisher: 'The charity structure does not deliver'

Charities? They're yesterday's news, according to the charity chief executive turned social entrepreneur. Tristan Donovan finds out why

Duncan Fisher already has two charities to his name. In 1994 he co-founded Action for Conservation Through Tourism, now the Travel Foundation, which funds community projects in tourist destinations. Five years later he co-founded the Fatherhood Institute, a think tank that encourages family policy to pay more attention to…

The future of Ning!

I'm picking up rumours like this one http://chris.pirillo.com/the-future-of-ning-communities/ that Ning is looking for new cash and having problems with their business model. It wouldn't be the first free network to crash. Anyone heard anything substantive?

should you trust your business advisor?

OK, seeing as a lot of work that I do is in the guise of a business advisor, this may sound a bit odd, and I suspect may turn out to a be a tad contentious, but bear with me…

I recently saw some publicity for a local enterprise agency that caught my eye (for the wrong reasons) because of a client testimonial they’d used: “their advisors give you honest feedback as to whether or not your idea is a good one”.

As business advisors, it shouldn’t be our job to tell you if… Continue

Social Traders puts social firms on the Google map

The launch of the ‘Just Buy’ campaign last month by Social Firms UK invited consumers to buy on a regular basis from their local social firms.

The campaign so inspired social enterprise advisor Bob Northey, Director

of Social Traders, that he offered his services in order to create a new Google

map using the latest mapping tools provided by the popular internet search

giant. The map is being launched…

the danger of being too successful in achieving your social purposes...

a charity made front page news by closing after receiving £100,000 from the Home Office because it's been "too successful" in reducing crime and so its services are no longer needed.

Well done to them - rather than try and continue a service that no one wants/needs, or to re-invent themselves with new services (which would undoubtedly have moved in into areas different to those that originally attracted its staff, volunteers, trustees and other supporters to it), they've decided to…

A question regarding setting up a CIC before you have a CIC registered

In short I am involved in buying a village shop as a community, we are going to create a community interest company to do this but there are some challenges about how we operate ahead of the formation of CIC, these are as follows

  1. We do not want to set up company until we are sure we will buy the shop so as to avoid asset lock of communities members cash so the solicitor is going to hold the funds. The other reason to avoid forming the CIC until we are certain it…
