You can sell your shares in a CIC 'as per normal' at retirement, it is 'who' would buy them and the 'intrinsic value' would be different to normal shares, due to the caps/asset lock.
You could also loan the money to the CIC, in some circumstances this makes it a lot easier to get back at exit.
